Filling boxes, poison control & Alphabet Soup...Just another Monday!

This school year I actually have reason to love Mondays! I know it's strange, but Monday is the only day that Sophie isn't in preschool. Ergo, I don't have to get up & rush out of the house to be anywhere! So we generally end up staying in our pjs until after lunch when it is time to go pick-up Jack from school.

Today was dreary outside, so we stayed inside & played. The girls & I spent some time cleaning out toy shelves & closets filling up boxes to be donated. It felt really good to purge some items that could be loved by someone else now, and truthfully I need to make a second pass because I am sure there is more that should go! Surprisingly, the kids have been very good at letting go of their toys. We filled up 3 boxes today! Best of all, when we were done filling the boxes, Jack got out a sheet of paper & cut it into 10 strips. He then hand-wrote on each one, "We care about you" and put 3 slips in each box. I have not decided if we will just drop the toys off at Goodwill or if I will Freecycle them, but I'm so proud of my little guy's big heart!

Oh, I made my first ever call to Poison Control today! I am thankful that in the almost 7 years that I've had children I have not needed to call. And also thankful that it was not serious today, but it was nice to have them there! While I was getting dressed today Darcy was in & out of the bathroom like she normally is...well, she somehow absconded with Jeff's gel deodorant. She came back in a few minutes later smacking her lips in a funny way & smelling very deodorized! I quickly wiped out her mouth & tongue & gave her water (which she also spilled all over herself & the floor) and then milk to drink. I asked her where the deodorant was & she promptly toddled off & returned with the deodorant & cap. I checked the label & unlike mine (which she has also tried to eat before), this brand said in case of ingestion call Poison Control immediately! By this point we were running late to pick-up Jack, so we all jumped in the car. I was very thankful to have my new Blackberry today because I was able to get online at a stoplight & find the number for Poison Control. (I know I should have it memorized or on some little sticker or something!) I should point out that Darcy was acting completely normal, but I still felt I should call. When we reached the school, I called the number while waiting in the carpool line. A very nice lady named Stephanie assured me that everything would be okay & that it was more of an irritant than a serious danger in such a small quantity. She said I had done the right thing by wiping out her mouth & then giving water & milk. So from now on, the deodorant will be kept on a higher shelf! I do praise God for protecting my little sweet girl from any serious harm or danger. And I am thankful that the lady on the phone didn't make me feel like a complete idiot for allowing my child to ingest deodorant! And in case you ever need it, the number for Poison Control is 1.800.222.1222 (I have it memorized now!)

And Alphabet Soup...it's what I made for dinner tonight. I used this yummy recipe from Real Simple magazine (http://food.realsimple.com/realsimple/recipefinder.dyn?action=displayRecipe&recipe_id=1829714) although I sauteed the carrots with some celery in olive oil first. And I also added some chopped bacon. Anyway, I thought it would be a fun meal for the kids. Darcy ate it up in her usual fashion, she's our hearty eater. Jack & Sophie had a lot of fun picking out letters & spelling words...but then what I had hoped would be a fun way to eat turned into drudgery as they were more interested in playing with the letters than actually eating them. (And it was a good soup!) So much for a fun dinner...we set the timer, we instituted no talking until soup was eaten, we said X more bites...and half an hour later the rest of the kitchen was cleaned up & Jack & Sophie had eaten about half of the soup in their bowls! I'm open to suggestions if anyone has a great way to get kids to eat!
