First Fruits

We have been super busy over the last week or so, lots of fun summer stuff going on, but that has led to less time during the day for me to blog :-(
Anyway, here is just a brief update on our garden...despite the INSANE heat here recently, the garden is doing great! We do have to water it every day, but when we returned from the lake this weekend we had the first fruits of our labors to harvest...cucumbers! The kids were so excited to pick the first cukes & we enjoyed one with dinner that night. We all thought it was pretty tasty! We have quite a few more coming cucumbers along & I think we may be up to our ears in cucumbers soon!
Here is the garden 2 weeks ago upon our return from the beach...thanks to Jeff's parents watering while we were away, things were growing nicely!
Lots of blossoms on the cucumber plant then & one cucumber starting to grow!
A week later & we have some really big cucumbers & tons more starting to grow!
Sophie with the first pick of the season!
Jack & Sophie with our first cukes
One of our tomato plants is finally putting out tomatoes...now the wait begins for them to grow & ripen!
Oh, and another update...we have been looking for more letters and often find them when I don't have the camera handy. Today, though, we found a great "A" today while we were swimming at a friend's house.
We found a decent "y" as well...
Stay tuned for a post on the wonderful family reunion we hosted at the lake last weekend! I'm still sorting through the TONS of photos I took, but it was a truly great time with family!

That's fantastic! The last time we saw your garden it looked like a box with dirt in it. This is a great learning experience for the kids; not to mention it will be wonderful to eat! Yum.

now i want to grow cucumbers...we got one tomatoe plant from DH's parents, and it already has a couple on there...getting bigger by the day...and a small mystery pepper plant...but cucumber sounds super... ;-)
yes, yours is growing amazingly fast!!! the heat definitely helps. love the picture of the kids holding their cukes, helps to justify how big they are. glad to see the update of your garden.

Wow, your garden is doing great!! I hear you on the heat! Green beans were our first fruits here and now the grape tomatoes are going crazy! I actually brought home my Grandma's old canner equipment. I may try to make sauce and diced tomatoes to can. I will definilty blog about it if I do:-) Can't wait to see more summer fun pictures-

Melanie, I recently came across a book called Square Foot Gardening...do you subscribe to that method? Your garden looks great. Anyway, we didn't get a chance to grow vegetables (though we do grow some flowers - rhododendrons, hydrangeas, etc.), but I was curious about your raised bed. Did you build it yourself? Anyway, love your blog....I will update mine, someday :) Seems like at the end of the day, I never have anymore energy! In God's timing! :)
Love to you and the family!
