Summer Memories...VBS Edition!

One of my goals for blogging every day this month is to finally get many of the drafts sitting in the queue from this summer finally published...so I am starting here with a recap of our fun & fantastic week at Vacation Bible School at the end of June...

As I mentioned in a previous post, in our household Summer Means...Vacation Bible School! We always have SO much fun participating in VBS at our church...600+ children, 200 volunteers, rockin' music, crazy games...it is my childhood memories of VBS, but super-sized! It is fun, and it is exhausting...having all 5 kids & myself dressed & ready to be out the door by 7:45 every morning was no easy feat for this night owl! Thankfully, since Jeff (aka Crash) also had to be there every morning, I had help getting the troops ready! Then it was a full morning of games, Bible stories, music, crafts, snacks & more until 12 noon & we usually packed a lunch to eat there, so we didn't get home until 1:30 or 2 most days...whew, can you say wiped out mama!
The pilot, Crash, with the kids before the opening night
Captain Crash!
Lucy isn't sure what to make of Daddy in that crazy get-up!
This is day two of the skit, right after the plane "exploded"!
Crash isn't quite sure how that happened, but it's all okay!
Lucy thinks that Crash guy is pretty funny!
She loved her first VBS experience!
As the week went on, Mrs. Buttermaker's hair got bigger & bigger &amp!
Crash is very sure of himself
He's the man with the plan
Miss Greenpeace also has a plan!
And, yes, Mrs. Buttermaker is holding a machete!
A decision must be made...
Bwana Hal says the group must go this way to find safety & rescue
Yes, that way!
Miss Greenpeace feels her way is better & sets off alone into the jungle

 The week goes on...
The hair gets bigger (I think there is a bird nesting in there!)
 The clothes are shredded!
But they finally reach a village, they are saved!
Crash decides to head back into the jungle (armed with Bwana Hal's guidebook, aka, Bible) to find Miss Greenpeace & share the true way with her. It was a really wonderful skit (much better than my short recap here!) and we all enjoyed watching Jeff in his role as Crash!
Each day Lucy & I helped in the craft activities area as hundreds of kids cycled through to work on the day's art. It was always fun to talk with them about what they were learning & all the fun they were having!

On the last day, the craft & the snack were one in the same...with a whole lot of shaking & the kids made ice cream. Whew, I must say that it was quite a workout for the arms shaking ziplock bags full of ice to get the mixture inside to turn into ice cream. (Click here for instructions!) And with over a hundred kids per shift, all shaking bags full of ice, it was loud!
But the reward was very sweet! Soft-serve ice cream right out of the bag!

And that brought the wonderful VBS week to a close...we are already all looking forward to next year!

Seriously, Melanie, how do you manage to look GORGEOUS...even in a VBS shirt?!!! Amazing! Love the pics of the skit. It was hilarious...and Jeff did a great job!!! VBS was so much fun! I wore my shirt last night and Jackson got so confused. He thought we were going to VBS...he kept singing the songs and saying, "church, you? mommy?"
